Thousands of words
Unspoken and unheard,
Cheerful farewells and smiling lies,
Those unspeakable goodbyes.

Pain carved with knives,
Tears smothered by lives
Lived and lost in
Those unspeakable goodbyes.

So much hollowness left
By absences, that bereft
We try to live through
Those unspeakable goodbyes.

The time has come again
To bid farewell to a friend.
But the words won’t come for
This unspeakable goodbye.

So instead of saying
Goodbye, I’ll be praying
This unspeakable goodbye
Is not as final as it seems.
